Resume tips and mistakes that can be embarrassing

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Not proofreading your emails or resume can lead to some very embarrassing mistakes.

Lesson 1 – Never use your resume as a place to test write other notes that you are going to write somewhere else!

Real-life example
I once had a candidate apply for one of my open positions and at the bottom of his resume along with his other references was this:

“Babyluv264 I know what you mean I feel the same way about everything you said. We seem to have a lot of similar interests and I’d like to get to know you better.”

Obviously this candidate was writing to someone whose profile he saw on an online dating service. I guess he thought the best place to test write the note out was on his resume. Unfortunately for him he hit the save button and forgot it was on there.

When I called him back I wanted to say, before we can proceed I just need to check on your references – can you tell me who Babyluv264 is? But I didn’t have the heart and just pointed out to him his mistake. I can’t remember the last time I spoke to someone who was that embarrassed about what he did.

I wonder how many other companies did he apply to with that on there?

  1. Good stuff, Kelly. Job seekers so often get wppared up in what’s NOT going right, that they completely forget about all the things that HAVE gone right and will continue to go right! It all comes down to positive thinking. The best is yet to come BC
